Early infection with high fever caused me a period of deafness when I was @ 3 yrs old.  Hearing eventually returned after an emergency bilateral myringiotomy (piercing both ear drums to stop them from bursting & scarring) without anesthetic. Trauma is held in the body until it has egress.  I saw the same 7" long needles used on me in a history exhibit at the Colorado School for the Deaf & Blind.  "EyeSong" is a narrative piece showing the arc of return to Deafness after 40 years as a hearing, multilingual person.

Butterflies are a cherished symbol for the Deaf who use American Sign Language (ASL), because butterflies are Deaf; their 'ears' are on their wings to sense vibration.  I live astride the Hearing/Deaf cultural divide.
